The principal learning component of the Foundation Diploma in Engineering provides learners with a foundation of skills associated with the world of engineering and its social and economic impact. Learners gain understanding of a broad selection of engineering activities and sector-relevant skills. The generic learning and additional and specialist learning components allow learners to acquire transferable skills that can be applied in a wide range of contexts. This makes the Foundation Diploma an excellent opportunity to experience the engineering industry without closing off progression routes to alternative sectors.
There are no prerequisites for entry to the Foundation Diploma. Learners may have progressed directly from Key Stage 3 or be looking to start a course post-16. It is particularly suitable for students who are not yet ready to embark on a Level 2 course but who would benefit from clear routes of progression to a wide range of Level 2 options. The Level 1 principal learning component constitutes a basic introduction to engineering and technology as well as providing relevant practical skills.
Although some of the principal learning topics of the Foundation Diploma and the Higher Diploma are comparable, they involve different content. The Foundation Diploma is a distinct qualification and requires fewer guided learning hours than the Higher Diploma.
